Haubstadt, IN - April 28, 2018 -  The “Spring Showdown” Saturday night at Tri-State Speedway ushered in the 2018 racing season at the track.  The AMSOIL USAC Sprint Cars and the Hoosier Tire Midwest Sprint Car Series made a joint appearance to headline the co-sanctioned program which was conducted using the USAC format.  Thirty-one drivers registered to compete.

Kevin Thomas Jr. proved once again that he has mastered the Tri-State quarter mile oval.  The 23 car starting field for the 30 lap feature was very competitive but the Cullman, Alabama, driver prevailed.  The $5,000 victory prize would be his!  He was still motivated and the excitement was evident post race.  “That was a blast!”

Thomas started fifth in the Dynamics, Inc/Mean Green Jonathan Byrd DRC Speedway Chevy and took over the lead on lap 27.  To that point there had been two other leaders.  Kody Swanson led the first 12 laps in the Rock Steady Racing sprinter after starting on the pole.  Fast qualifier C.J. Leary had a very quick sprint car and he took over the lead on lap thirteen and held the point with Thomas in hot pursuit.  Leary finished second in the Leary Racing/Leary Construction DRC followed by Logan Seavey, Dave Darland, and Justin Grant.

The second five to cross the finish line in the feature included Chris Windom in sixth followed by Robert Ballou, Swanson, Carson Short, and Chase Stockon.  Joe Stornetta placed 11th to take the Wilwood Tuff Brakes Award.  Ballou was on the move in finishing seventh after starting way back in 20th spot.  The strong run resulted in him being named as the Keizer Aluminum Wheels Hard Charger of the Race.

In preliminary racing, heat races were won by C.J. Leary, Chase Stockon, Kevin Thomas Jr., and Dave Darland.  Logan Seavey then won the semi feature.  Brandon Mattox raced up from the fifth row to finish second in the 12 lap event.  The event was held to transfer the top 6 finishers into the feature field.  A scramble for final transfer spots brought about some excitement with cars spinning on the final lap.

The MSCS Sprint Car Series will be racing next at Gas City I-69 Speedway on Friday May 4th.  They will return to Tri-State Speedway to compete on Saturday May 12th.
